Eating healthy for children is easiest to identify. Be smart and creative. But the question is what healthy food for children is. We all understand that eating healthy for children is difficult thing in the world, since children are dishonorable for disliking veggies.

Everywhere you look people are on diets or are thinking about going on one. We our surrounded by commercials, infomercials, and so on trying to sell us healthy meals and diets plans. It has become a multi-billion dollar industry and it's truly a waste of time and money. 95% of people who go on diets gain all the weight back that they lost because diets focus on short-term results and are generally not healthy.

After New Year’s this past year I walked into Barnes & Noble to check out their new releases because I wanted to use a gift card I had received as a Christmas present. What I found in the New Releases section was not what I expected. There was nothing but diet books!! And I’m not even embellishing about this at all. There wasn’t one new release in the entire section. This was really disheartening because I’m an avid reader and I expected to find a wide variety of books that were just released focused on different subjects as there always is.

Not so much after New Year’s I found out. Once the holidays are over and we enter a new year people are dedicated to eating healthy and working out more because they failed to do so the previous year (and the year before that and so on). The sad thing is these people usually join a gym and go on a diet for the first 2-3 weeks after the New Year and then give up because they aren’t seeing results after such a short time period. I’m sure Barnes & Noble is not the only bookstore who does this after the New Year. After all, they are in business to make money and what better way to start off a new year than selling a plethora of diet books to unassuming people who come in droves looking for them?

This whole episode was very upsetting to say the least. As someone who has a good understanding of healthy living I will say that diets are a complete waste of time and money. Diets are not long-term programs that focus on overall good health. They usually consist of cutting back your calorie intake to extreme levels, eating nothing but a specific food category for an extended period of time, eating frozen prepared meals (often sold by the same companies putting out the book or an affiliate), and so on. In fact, there are so many different kinds of diets out there it’s not even funny. Each one promises you’ll lose weight and feel great. What they don’t tell you for obvious reasons is that 95% of people who go on diets gain all their weight back once they get sick and tired of the diet or once the diet is over. The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and is extremely profitable to the companies that sell diet plans, pills, and meals. Have you ever read the ingredients on a Nutrisystem package or any other prepared meal? If you have an understanding of each ingredient I’d be shocked since most people don’t have a clue, including myself.

The simple fact is that diets are short-term programs and often times very unhealthy. Cutting your caloric intake to extreme levels can leave you feeling weak and deprive you of many nutrients you need to maintain good health. If you truly want to maintain a healthy weight and a strong immune system you need to learn to eat healthy and exercise and make it part of your lifestyle not as a short-term fix to your current weight problem. Eating healthy and exercising is an extremely broad topic but here are some guidelines to go by if you truly care about your health and want to maintain a healthy weight:

1) Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night-This really depends on the individual and these are just basic guidelines. Some people require less sleep than this and some people require more. Only you know how much sleep you need to feel energized the next day. It is a known fact that sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain. If you want a strong immune system and want to maintain a healthy weight make sure you get plenty of sleep every night.

2) Don’t skip breakfast- This is truly the most important meal of the day. When you sleep at night you’re fasting since you’re not consuming any food while you sleep. If you want to speed up your metabolism it is imperative that you don’t skip breakfast since this gets your metabolism going first thing in the morning. You’ll notice you’ll have more energy throughout the morning and it will really help burn fat in the long run. I’m not going to recommend what you should eat but make sure it’s healthy. Whole grains, a lean protein source, and fruit are always a great combination. I usually have a bowl of Special K cereal with Soy Milk and add blueberries to my cereal. I usually have a glass of Pomegranate Juice or Orange Juice with breakfast as well. On top of this I drink Green Tea for its high dose of antioxidants and because it is known to speed up your metabolism.

3) Eat a small healthy meal every 3-4 hours- I usually eat a 300-400 calorie snack every 3-4 hours to keep my metabolism going throughout the day. It is a known fact that by eating small meals a day you increase your metabolism. I usually pack a couple Tuna Fish sandwiches on Whole Wheat bread and add a Tomato and Romaine Lettuce. Another good meal is fruit with Cottage Cheese. As long as you’re eating a light and healthy snack every 3-4 hours you should be good. As a rule of thumb you biggest meal should be breakfast and they should decline in calorie intake throughout the day. It’s a big misconception that lunch and dinner should be your biggest meals. What happens after a big lunch? You usually get tired in the mid afternoon which can really affect your work. By eating small meals throughout the day I don’t suffer from these tired spells and usually have a ton of energy all day long.

4) Drink water-It is important to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Most experts agree you should get at least 64 ounces of water per day. I’ve spoken to some doctors who say you should only drink when you’re thirsty and not overdo it. As someone who used to drink nearly two gallons of water a day I can tell you that the only thing that came out of it was more time running to the bathroom. I recommend getting between 64-100 ounces of water per day. They say if you exercise regularly you should drink more than the recommended amount each day to keep your muscles hydrated.

5) Limit alcohol intake- Most experts agree that a man should drink no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one drink per day. If you’re really dedicated to maintaining a healthy weight and good health I recommend having a glass of red wine with dinner a couple times a week at most. Calories from alcohol can really add up and too much alcohol consumption is not good for your health.

6) Exercise regularly- If you don’t have experience exercising at all I recommend joining a gym and asking the staff for help. I have also found that people who work out are very helpful when it comes to knowledge of exercise and nutrition. If you have the means and want to hire a personal trainer I’ve seen many people obtain great results by doing so and it’s a huge boost having someone motivate you. Most experts agree that you should get at last 3 days a week of exercise for about an hour each session but this depends on your fitness level and goals. It’s really too broad of a subject to get into here but there are a ton of great resources online and in bookstores to help you get a workout program started. I recommend consulting your physician before starting a program though.

These are just a few guidelines to help you lead a more healthy lifestyle and to help you maintain a healthy weight. As a rule of thumb, stick to the perimeter of a grocery store since this is where you will find produce, lean proteins, and dairy products. The aisles are usually filled with boxed and packaged goods that are filled with sugars and preservatives that are not good for you.

Do yourself a favor and do some research on proper nutrition and exercise programs. Just remember that eating healthy and exercising should be a chosen lifestyle and not a short-term fix. Stay away from the latest and greatest diets and choose to live a healthy lifestyle. You’ll be glad you did.

It is an uphill task for parents to get their kids to eat healthy, nutritious food. Read this article to learn simple ways by which you could get your children to eat healthy. These tips are easy to implement and can be followed by just about anyone.

Is there a parent who has not faced her child throwing a tantrum over eating healthy food? I doubt so! Kids demand to eat junk food almost all the time. What is the way in which we can get our kids to eat healthy and not have a battlefield at the dining table everyday? Sounds difficult but is not actually so bad. Follow these simple tips to have your kids eat healthy:

* Get them to eat the food, which is cooked for the entire family: Right from the childhood, let your child eat the same food, which is cooked for the adults albeit with less spices. This will condition the child to not expect “special” or “different” food for himself. He will naturally accept eating home-cooked food.

* Inculcate healthy eating habits from childhood itself: Give your child spinach, papaya, beetroot, and carrot purees along with other vegetable and fruit purees right from the time when you introduce your baby to solids. This will let the child explore different tastes and textures and will make him relatively non fussy when it comes to food choices. He will be more open to trying new foods.

* Restrict junk food for the entire family strictly to once in a week: Make sure that no one in the family has over-refined, laden with fats and calories, fried, or junk food more than once in a week. If this is strictly enforced from the childhood, then you will see your child throwing a tantrum less often. Remember ice creams, chocolates, cookies and other treats restricted to only once in a week! You have to lead by example. You have to show them that you eat healthy for them to emulate it.

* Snacks must be healthy as far as possible: Do not allow your kids to eat oily, fried, and fattening snacks like chips, sugary treats, soda, pizzas etc. Make sure that if you have to give them a pizza, bake it at home on a whole-wheat base with lots of veggies and cheese. You could make a tasty and satisfying sandwich with peanut butter or cheese. Try giving them a fruit with a glass of milk as their evening snack. Roasted peanuts, baked chicken strips, roasted potatoes make for other good snacking ideas. Get innovative and make recipes that not only look exciting and taste good but are healthy as well. You can find a lot of such recipes and healthy ideas over the internet.

* Eat together sitting on the dining table: Let your child eat at the dining table ALWAYS! Eating in their room or on the couch sitting in front of the television is not acceptable. Let the child eat in peace, seeing and enjoying what he is eating. This helps in curbing mindless eating and prevents childhood obesity. Let the family have at least one meal together – sharing and interacting.

* Involve your child in food decisions: Allow your child to offer suggestions about what he would like to eat, and then throw in your healthy ideas to conjure up the treat he requested. Flavored yoghurt with fresh berries with a base of digestive biscuits makes for a great dessert. So, let your creativity flow and incorporate ideas from your kids. You would be surprised at how willing they are to accept something if they feel ownership or involvement in the process.

These simple tips would go a long way in ensuring that your child, in fact, does eat healthy. They are not so difficult to implement if you are aware of them. So, go for a healthy and happy family. It is in your hands!

What does it mean to you to eat healthy? Everyone has different ideas about this and everyone has different goals when it comes to their diet and health. One important factor when it comes to a healthy diet is to find one that you can stick to for a lifetime. Some consider a diet to be something temporary, but you need to eat, exercise, and live in a healthy way for your life. So this means making permanent changes that you can live with every single day, even as the years go by.

This might be something as simple as increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables you have every day. It might mean something more drastic, such as strictly watching the amount of fat you consume as well as cholesterol and other elements.

Your goals will determine what is necessary for you. A serious athlete that is concerned about conditioning will need something different than the person that is very sedentary but who is just concerned about avoiding a heart attack.

No matter your personal goals for what it means to eat healthy, there are some common elements you should consider. One important ingredient in eating healthy is to have a wide variety of foods, and this means eating more of the good stuff and less of the bad things as well.

Really, you don’t need to make it any more complicated than that. While it sounds simple, applying this principle is where the difficulty comes into play! Most people would say that they want to eat healthier but of course we all live with constant temptation when it comes to eating. This makes it very difficult to actually follow through with healthy choices. One way to do this however is to make those healthy choices as tempting as the ones that are not so healthy!

Here are some ways to do that. Number one, buy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables when at the supermarket. There may be varieties there that you’ve never heard of and have never tried. Why not try a few next time you’re there and see what you’ve been missing?

Learning to cook and trying new recipes is a good way to have some excitement in your daily diet. Check online or get a cookbook that specializes in low fat recipes or healthy eating. This may mean many fun new recipes to try. Once you get started with this type of cooking, you may see how easy it is to make it a way of life.

And of course you don’t always need to make major changes to eat healthier. Sometimes just something simple, such as removing skin from chicken, can make a big difference. Think about trimming fat from beef as well so that you reduce the fat you take in and improve your health. Never dismiss such small changes when you think about eating healthier.

Here are some other simple suggestions you can consider when it comes to eating healthier:

Use 2% or skim milk rather than whole milk for drinking, for on top of your cereal, and for recipes.
Try sorbet or low fat yogurt instead of full fat ice cream.
Use spray for coating pans rather than cooking foods in butter.
Choose lean cuts of meat rather than ones full of fat.
Opt for fish or chicken rather than red meat.
Egg substitutes are better than real eggs for recipes and for baking, as well as for just eating!

There are many things you can do to make small changes and to improve your health, and these changes can add up to improve your health and fitness regardless of your goals. Whatever your level of fitness and whatever your goals are, eating healthier and losing weight and keeping it off may not be as difficult as you think it would be.

Often it just means using your common sense for making changes to your diet, becoming more physically fit, and reducing your fat and cholesterol levels. If you try to absolutely deprive yourself of your favorite foods, this can cause cravings and overeating. This can mean a vicious cycle of overeating, fad diets, and so on.

Think of healthy eating as being like a marathon, not a quick sprint. You need to make changes you can live with for a lifetime and this means the way you shop for food, cook food, and choices in what you eat as well. When you make changes you can live with for the rest of your life you can then eat healthy for a lifetime.

As children are growing healthy eating habits are extremely important to their development and long-term health. Ingrain healthy eating habits early, educate your children on proper nutrition, and your children will thank you.

Helping children to eat healthy can be quite challenging. Many children seem to believe “only bad things taste good” and “I eat things that taste good”. Many adults fall into the same pattern, but as you know it is important for everyone eat healthy foods. It is particularly important for children as they are still in the developmental growth stages and how they care for themselves now will have a huge impact on their health as they grow up to be adults. Parents should be informed about proper healthy eating for children so they can provide the proper nutrition.

Healthy eating for children includes all parts of the food pyramid. Retaining balance is the key to much consumption in one area could cause negative health consequences. This is particularly true of salts, sugars and fats. While substances like protein nourish our bodies and help us to build muscle, an excess of protein consumption puts more stress on the body and leads to a buildup of fat. A healthy diet for children is low in salts, sugars and fats. It should have substantial, but not excessive amounts of protein, calcium, carbohydrates and iron. Children should eat enough grain and get plenty of fruits and vegetables. It is fine for children to have treats once in a while, but please do it in moderation.

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day for your children. Breakfast provides the energy they need to get through the day. Children who don’t have breakfast tend to over eat later in the day. Studies suggest that children who eat breakfast perform better at school and have less illness, lower weight and lower levels of cholesterol. Children should eat a balanced breakfast that includes carbohydrates, fruits and calcium. A bowl of cereal limited in sugar with a banana or a pancake with fruit and yogurt are both great breakfast foods for children.

As important a role as a healthy diet plays, its benefits are diminished if they aren’t complemented with exercise. Healthy eating for children includes healthy physical activity for them as well. Eating healthy all day won’t do your children much good if they’re sitting in front of the television all day. Healthy eating for children also starts with healthy eating for parents. Parent’s eating habits will heavily influence their children’s. Be a good role model, set a good example and make healthy eating part of your family values.

If we can educate ourselves on the basics of nutrition and start making healthy changes to our lifestyles good things start to happen to us. We start to lose weight and feel better about ourselves. We have a better attitude about work, life, friends, and family. We have energy left at the end of the day to do the things we want to do. It starts a positive 'snowball effect' and before you know it you're hooked on this 'healthy lifestyle'.

Eating healthy is something we all would like to do, or maybe better said; eating healthy is something we all ‘know’ we should be doing. In order to eat healthy we must know how to make the right food choices, then continue to establish those food choices on a daily basis to perpetuate a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy eating for life is all about what you eat, which makes the choices very crucial to your results.

Looking around at all the weight problems plaguing our society today, one might think that we have forgotten what healthy eating is really all about. Our bodies were designed to need nutrition in the form of food for our survival, plain and simple. But, how did we ever get to the point, where eating food for survival, turned into a conglomeration of fast food industries that have no concern for the health of our society?

Nobody truly wants to be overweight. No one looks in the mirror at their cellulite dimples all over their body and finds it sexy. How did we ever get to this state anyway? It didn’t happen overnight; that’s for sure. It crept up on us while we were asleep at the dinner table! Before we knew it we were 20 lbs (or more) overweight. Turning back the clock seemed to be almost impossible.

If losing weight was as easy as the plethora of magazines in grocery stores tout it to be, there wouldn’t be a weight problem. Fact is, habits are hard to break. If we are overweight, it’s because we have allowed unhealthy eating habits to take over our lives; Children that grow up with bad eating habits don’t always know that there are alternatives. They have been taught to eat certain foods and, as a result, those foods are strongly woven into their very lifestyles. Then there is Emotional eating which can be very self destructive. It can become a roller coaster ride: The emotions you’re overwhelmed with sets off improper eating which sets off guilt which sets off more emotions which…I think you get the picture. Emotional eating needs to be seen as a problem and understood before the proper steps can be taken to start living a healthier lifestyle.

The word ‘diet’ is one of those four letter words that, to me, has a very negative connotation to it. No one goes on a diet thinking, “Yes! I want to diet the rest of my life so I can be thin — and depressed!” You might psych yourself up to lose some weight by following a strict diet but only by pure grit. Then, when the weight is lost (if the weight is lost), you just go back to your old eating habits and the weight you might have lost is back and then some. When we replace the word ‘diet’ with ‘lifestyle’ it doesn’t sound like so much work. Everybody has a lifestyle, whether it’s a healthy lifestyle or an unhealthy lifestyle is decided by the choice of foods that you choose to eat on a day to day basis.

If we can educate ourselves on the basics of nutrition and start making healthy changes to our lifestyles good things start to happen to us. We start to lose weight and feel better about ourselves. We have a better attitude about work, life, friends, and family. We have energy left at the end of the day to do the things we want to do. It starts a positive ‘snowball effect’ and before you know it you’re hooked on this ‘healthy lifestyle’. Eating healthy will just become second nature.

Food is necessary and put here on earth not only for us to enjoy, but also to sustain us and keep us healthy. It never ceases to amaze me how creative man is with food. There are endless varieties of recipes to be found in books, eBooks and online. We never get tired of searching for new recipes to try. If food is such an important part of our daily lives why are most of us walking around hungry, afraid to eat anything for fear of gaining more weight?

So what’s the key to all of this? — Give up, live it up, eat and be fat? — I don’t think so. I think the answer is much more realistic than that. Have you ever heard the saying “All things in moderation”? How about, instead of using the word “denial” when it comes to eating, we replace it with the word “self control”. How about we replace the word “ignorance” when it comes to lifestyle with the word “knowledge”?

One of my favorite sayings is “Knowledge brings understanding, and then wisdom, to change your world for the better – starting today”. This is what you need. When you equip yourself with knowledge it brings understanding and then you can apply wisdom to change your world (your situation) for the better. You will never be able to lose weight until you gain the knowledge you need to start that happening in your life.

Once you understand what certain foods do or don’t do for your body, it will change your outlook toward food and the effect it has on your lifestyle. Those cravings you get for certain wrong foods won’t be as strong because you will know what they do to your body. But, back to that word moderation for a moment — You can have your favorite foods if you want — but with moderation. Instead of food owning you, you will own food. You will eat because you enjoy eating knowing food sustains you and keeps you thriving. Moderation and self control bring a new freedom to your life.

We know how children absolutely adore junk food of all kinds, and most kids would choose an ice-cream over having an apply any day. As a result, their diet remains unchanged all the way to adulthood. So what is the best way to teach our kids to develop good eating habits at a young age?

Good eating habits are essential to teach your children at a young age. As a mother of 5 myself I have had quite the experience in making sure that my kids eat healthily. With junk food everywhere, it makes it really hard for parents to make sure that their kids are eating healthy. Good eating habits need to be developed at the earliest age possible. Next time, instead of giving your toddler a cookie for a snack try some apple slices or grapes.

If you are a parent of a toddler, this is the perfect time to really create some good eating habits. They are so impressionable at this age. If you are having an apple for a snack they will as well. You cannot expect to eat a candy bar for a snack while they are given fruit. It doesn’t make sense to them, and they want to have what you’re having.

By having good eating habits yourself, you teach them by example. Teaching a child to eat healthy when they have not done so earlier in life is difficult, believe me. I shall use myself as an example. As soon as my daughter was old enough for solid foods, she chewed on apple slices and peaches. During last Easter, she was given a basket of chocolate bunnies and she didn’t want them. Instead, she was asking for bananas. She is now 2 years old by the way. By developing good eating habits early on she will be fixed with those habits for the rest of her life.

Other hand, I adopted 3 girls that were older and had not established any type of healthy diet. That was one really hard thing to change, but by the rest of us eating healthy they learned quickly.

Not only is junk food one of the worst enemies of a balanced diet, fast food has now become a regular part of our lives. We are all too busy to make good healthy meals, so we settle for fast food instead. The fast food industry is taking quite a rap for how horribly unhealthy it is and how it is destroying our good eating habits. The fast food industry is fast realizing that and is now trying to compensate by offering some healthy foods. A good example of this is apple slices are now being offered as desert at certain fast food chains. Even though they are making changes, it is still crucial that a healthy balanced diet is established in the home. Schools have begun offering healthier lunches and are getting some criticism as well. With making sure that your kids eat a healthy breakfast, a well-balanced lunch at school, and a wholesome home cooked dinner, you can really help keep your kids happy, energetic as well as healthy. Unhealthy treats are okay to have every now and then, but they should not become a staple in your home.

Healthy afternoon snacks such as fruit will also help keep your kids disease and illness-free. Studies have proven that kids who do not have a well-balanced and healthy diet tend to have a weaker immune system, hence they fall sick a lot more often than other children.

To ensure that our children develop a mindset to eating healthy throughout their lives, it is up to us as parents to lead by example and show them that good eating habits start at home.

You would think that the reasons for eating healthy should be a given. The truth is that people still have questions needing answered. This could stem from childhood eating habits, family genes or from previous weight loss failure. If we can analyse these questions and come up with reasonable answers healthy eating should be a small step away.

Well, eating healthy should be a no-brainer for everyone but let’s have a look at some of the reasons why it is so important and some of the questions it generates.

Why should I eat healthy if it won’t make me slim?

If you are overweight then eating healthy will play a part in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. People who continually fail while attempting to lose weight and then become defiant about their own eating habits often ask themselves this question.

In simple terms the health benefits you are about to read about should be reason alone but if losing weight is your goal then eating healthy has to be combined with other factors such as your personal lifestyle, exercising and motivation. What you should know is that your healthy eating plan should not necessarily be the same as someone else’s. Variables such as sex, age, height, weight and activity are all factors that will determine what your healthy eating plan should consist of.

Why should I eat healthy if certain diseases run in the family?

A nutritious diet will ensure that your body receives the correct nutrients that will prevent certain types of cancer. Also, reducing your intake of saturated fats will lower the risk of developing heart disease. By receiving the afore mentioned nutrients this will help your body strengthen your bones, tendons and muscles. In addition, if you currently experience health issues such as diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure then eating healthy will help to control these problems

Why should I eat healthy if my parents didn’t think it was a problem?

Previous generations probably ate healthier than nowadays but just didn’t realise it. Going back between 30-40 years ago, or longer, fast food, TV dinners and microwave meals were not as readily available as they are now and your parents were more likely to get you to eat the vegetables on your plate ( no doubt under protest) and make you finish eating them with the threat of sanctions if you didn’t! So, unwittingly, they were getting you to eat healthier. Times change though and people’s lives became busier and more hectic leading to lazy and convenient eating habits for themselves and their families.

It is up to all concerned parents to change their own eating habits and that of their kids. The rate of childhood obesity is now so alarming that as responsible adults it is our duty to educate our kids to eat properly and secure their health and the health of their own kids. Not only will you see a difference in your kids health but, once you remove the additives and flavourings from their diets then you should also note an improvement in their behaviour. This is backed up by scientific fact.

As you can see “why should I eat healthy?” is a question that can be asked in various different forms but every answer should be a catalyst for us to change our eating habits forever.
